Gopala Ratnam Subramaniam Iyer[3] (born 2 June 1956), commonly known as Mani Ratnam, is an Indian film director, screenwriter and producer who predominantly works in Tamil cinema, based out of Chennai. Starting his career as a management consultant, he made an entry into films through the Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi in 1983. Despite a commercial failure, the film earned critical acclaim and fetched an award for the screenplay at the Karnataka State Film Awards.
