Altan are one of Ireland foremost traditional Irish music groups. The group came together over 25 years ago, founding member and singer/fiddle player Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh began the group with her husband Frankie Kennedy, the Belfast-born flute player, now sadly deceased.

The group have always had a strong association with the Gaoth Dobhair area of Co. Donegal, and much of Altan's style, as well as their music and songs is sourced from the creative well of that region.
